Redesign the Burning Man City Plan / by Richard

Burning Man is a week-long, annual an experiment in community, art, radical self-expression, and radical self-reliance, that began in San Francisco's Baker Beach in 1986 and migrated to the Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada, USA.

Each year, the theme, art, and participants are different, but for nearly two decades the general city plan has remained the same, reaching back to 1997. So the Black Rock City Ministry of Urban Planning has created the Black Rock City Street Plan Design Competition, to redesign the urban plan of Burning Man.

Entries should conform to the following basic criteria:

  • The city plan should fit within the existing pentagonal boundaries of the event (see previous year city plans as a guideline). Non-conforming entries will be accepted, but keep in mind that the boundaries are determined in part by the BLM.
  • The Man and The Temple should be central focii of the city plan.
  • The city plan should provide a large open area or areas for art installations. while the ratio of open space and camping space should be similar to the 2015 city plan.
  • The city plan should be navigable and have a straightforward addressing or coordinate system (an important requirement for safety services so they can easily locate an address in the city)
  • Other than that, no limits or preconceptions!

Safety considerations are likely to be a important factor in the finalist stage, so emergency services can easily find and reach people in need of help.

Be part of an amazing experience and design one of the most epic cities in the world. Learn more about the competition and register, here.
