Leica's model M, created in 1954, matured until 2012

Leica's model M stands for Meisterstück and the second M in the resent MM model stands for Monochrome. Yes, it's really a masterpiece, but If you ask Leica they will say M stands for Messsucher. Messsucher is the German term for a combined range/viewfinder, which shows you action outside the actual frame.

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication
— Leonardo da Vinci

On a Leica's Monochrome model the AA filter is removes from the sensor, like on high-end cameras such as the Nikon D800E and D810 was considered a bold step but is now spreading throughout the photographic world.

Then Leica removed the colour filter, considered by many to be a step too far. Who would pay all this extra money for a dedicated black and white camera when color files can be converted so easily and so effectively?

The Monochrom model was something of an experiment and Leica had no way of knowing whether or not it would succeed, especially at the pip-squeaking price. The bet has paid off and I think it is only a matter of time before we see other monochrome cameras reaching the market.

The Leica Monochrom is a camera for the connoisseur, a discreet rangefinder being extremely quiet and very compact, basically identical to its fist M model in 1954.
