Yesterday morning, the people of our blue planet woke up to find that the fate of the human species has been placed in the hands of a misleading, exploitative, reality television mogul and unconvicted sex criminal: Donald J.Trump. As the documentary filmmaker John Pilger tells us.
But first, let’s take a breath. Yes, this is a disturbing event of extraordinary magnitude. Nobody quite knows what is about to happen, and while it might be worse than all of our fears, it could also end up not quite being nearly as bad as expected.
At least in the very immediate aftermath, the consensus that we underestimated the racism and sexism of the American people, and the degree to which US was full of a dark and rotten hatred. As Paul Krugman summed up his article in The New York Times.
But the guilty one for this monumental mistake is largely the International and especially the American Media, repeating stupidly what the capital and shareholders want them to report. As well as a corrupt Democratic party who missed the fact that many Trump voters had a kind of undirected dissatisfaction and anger at the Establishment. Leaving the American people the choice between Lucifer and Lex Luthor. As Jonathan Pie describes in his excellent video.
Worst-case scenario in the next four years: fascism, a wall, mass deportations, the end of Obamacare, a Trump brand on the White House and either a trade war or an actual war with China.
Best-case scenario in the next four years: Ruth Bader Ginsburg refuses to retire or die, the Democratic Party finds a backbone, turns away from its fixation on the center and heeds the call for an economic revolt against the 1 percent, joined by Black Lives Matter, the Occupy movement, and resurgent feminism.
Both scenarios could happen at the same time. We may have thought history had ended, that nothing too terribly unexpected would ever shake us up again. But history never ends. The future could hold anything.
I sincerely regret that Frank Zappa didn't have the time to meet with Donald J.Trump.
